English: A Sapper of 53 Field Squadron (Air Support) during the dismantling of the Barker Crossing in Cumbria.

Army Engineers returned to Cumbria this week [21 February 2011] to dismantle the temporary military bridge over the River Derwent which they erected during the severe flooding in 2009.

The Sappers from 64 Works Group and 53 Field Squadron (Air Support) supported by local Territorial Army soldiers from 4th Battalion Duke of Lancaster’s Regiment, 156 Transport Regiment Royal Logistic Corps, and 33 Signal Squadron started dismantling the 170ft (52m) logistic support bridge on Monday.

The bridge was built following the floods in 2009 when many bridges in Cumbria were damaged making them unsafe to use.

The Army was requested by the civil authorities to build a temporary footbridge in Workington when the River Derwent divided the town.

When it is dismantled the bridge - named Barker Crossing in memory of PC Bill Barker who was killed when the Northside Bridge was swept away - will then be transported south for refurbishment and storage.

Army spokeswoman, Captain Caroline Livesey (32) who designed the bridge explained:

“Barker Crossing was only ever a temporary emergency measure until other bridges were repaired following the floods.

“The Royal Engineers are very proud of the bridge and the role it played in helping residents to cross the Derwent.

“Extracting the bridge is a relatively complex operation but we are on schedule and everything is running smoothly.

Captain Livesey continued:

“The disruption to the civilian population has been minimal and we are on target to handover the site to the council on 4th March.

“The local population have been very supportive with people coming up to say it’s great to see the Army back.
