st morn-ing after his arrival he set out to find work. Hewas accustomed to the use of the pen, but madeup his mind to take any work he could get. It was a snowy morning, and as he passeddown Fourth Avenue he saw a lot of men shov-elling snow from the sidewalks. He asked per-mission to join them in their labor. This wasgranted him, and he went to work as heartily asif shovelling had been his regular employment.While they were at work, the owner of the storefrom the front of which the snow was beingshovelled, came out. He noticed the intelligentlook of the young strangers face, and wonderedhow it was that such a smart young man wasworking at such an occupation. Signor Succi of Milan, the Italian Dr. Tanner, being examined by Physicians on the Thirtieth day of his fast. ing from him the story of his disappointmentand present position. He was so much pleasedwith the young mans manner, that he invitedhim to call upon him at his office the next day.That night the young man laid aside his shovel,which he had no occasion to use any more. The next morning he called on the merchant,and was offered a small place, at a low salary.He filled it so well, that in a few months he wasraised to a higher position, and at the end ofthree years he was chief clerk in that great es-tablishment, with the prospect of an interest inthe business.
