notto be treated as antedating Daisies, which are Dico-tyledons. Indeed, Orchids are modern, and there areindications that they are not yet at the climax of theirevolution. There may have been a period in whichsome Choripetalse existed as the only Dicotyledons, butit is probable that the higher forms of the Divisionattained their specialization side by side with theSympetalae, and that the latter began a successful careerupon their own particular lines, so to speak, in earlychoripetalous times. There are two divisions of the Sympetalae. In onethe number of petals is equal to that of the carpels—theseare the Isocarpce (Gr. isos, equal; carpos, fruit); in theother the carpels are fewer than the petals—these arethe AnisocarfCB (Gr. anisos, unequal). Separate car-pels are never found in the Sympetalse. They invariablycohere, and form a compound pistil. Following theprinciple already laid down, we naturally conclude thatamong the Sympetalse the Isocarpse are more primitive Plate XXII.

The Isocarpse include a number of familiar plantsbelonging to the Orders Ericales, Diospyrales, andPrimulales. The Ericales include the Wintergreen(Pt/roZa), the parasitical Fir-Rape (Monotropahypopitys),the members of the Heath family, among which are theAzaleas, Rhododendrons, Ardromeda, the variousHeaths, the Arbutus (Strawberry-Tree), and the Bear-berries, Cranberries, Huckleberries. The Primulales arerepresented by the Primroses, Pimpernels, Water Violet,Cyclamen, Loosestrifes (Lysimachia), Chickweed Winter-green (Trientalis Europcea), Sea-Milkwort (Glavx mari-tima, Plate XXV.), and some systematists include thePlumbaginales, the Thrift (Armeria), and Sea-Lavender,(Statice limonium) in the same Order.
