the city, one of the companies made haste tothe gate and stood before it, so that the men of Shechem could not flee backinto the city. And the two other companies ran upon them, out in the field,and slew them. Then Abimelech and his men went into the city, and foughtagainst it all that day; and he slew the people, and broke down the houses anddestroyed the city. Abimelech went to another city named Thebez, and fought against it and took it. After it was taken, the men and women of the city fled into a strong ■tower, and shut to the door, and went up to the top of the tower. Then Abimelech came near the door to burn the tower. But a woman who was on the top of the tower, threw down a piece of a mill-stone upon his head and broke his skull. When he saw that he must die, he called his armor-bearer and said to him, Draw thy sword and slay me, that the people may not say I was slain by a woman. Then the armor-bearer drew his sword, and thrust it through Abimelechs body and killed him. 94
