fples, and cameto the sea of Galilee. And many persons from Jerusalem and Judea, and fromcountries far off, when they heard of the wonderful works that he did, came tohim. And those that were sick crowded around him, that they might by onlytouching him, be made well; and he healed them all. After this, he went out to a desert place alone, and stayed there all nightpraying to God. When it was morning he called his disciples, and chose twelveof them that they might be with him, and that he might send them out topreach, and give them power also to do miracles, to heal those that were sick, and to cast out devils. These twelve he called apostles, which means, Messengers. They were Peter, and Andrew his brother, James and John his brother, Philip and Bartholomew,Thomas and Matthew the publican, James and Lebbeus, Simon and JudasIscariot. And seeing the multitudes that followed him, he went up on to a mountain, and when he was set down, his disciples came to him, and he taught them there. 242

And one of the rulers of the synagogue cameto him, and kneeling down at his feet, begged him earnestly, saying, Mylittle daughter is sick and ready to die: I pray thee come and lay thyhands on her, that she may live. Jesus went with him, and so did his disciples. And many people followed after him and crowded around him. Among themwas a woman who had suffered for twelve years from a disease which nophysician could cure; for she had asked many, and given them all the moneyshe had, yet she was no better, but rather grew worse. When she heard thatJesus was there, she said to herself, If I can but touch his garment, I shall bemade well. So she came in the crowd behind him, and touched him; and assoon as she had done it she felt that her sickness was cured. Then Jesus, turning toward the people that followed him, said, Who touchedme ? H
