These twobrakes are connected mechanically together in such away that the pressure divides itself uniformly on the twoaxles. When the eight brakeshoes are applied a pressureis brought to bear against the grooved pulleys at the sametime. The rack brake is operated in two different ways,by hand and automatically. To secure this a speed gov-ernor is used, which puts the brake in operation when thespeed exceeds the normal. Moreover,when the main switch is opened thebrakes are automatically set. The locomotives for driving gear arefitted with two shafts, of which one issupplied with a gear toothed for fittinginto the rack. The motors drive an in-termediate shaft placed between the twomain car axles, and on which ismounted a toothed pinion, which isloose on the shaft. This pinion is oper-ated by the electric motors through theintermediary of two trains of gears, re-ducing the speed in the proportion
