Lisa Chandler (born November 25, 1969 in Rochford, England) is an artist from New Zealand known for working with subjects of urban space, places and the global protesting culture. She lives and works in both Golden Bay, New Zealand and Leipzig, Germany.1

Painter Lisa Chandler holds an MFA (Hons) from Whitecliffe College of Arts and Design, Auckland, New Zealand. She presented her thesis paper ‘Negotiating the Non-Place’ at the Affective Landscapes Conference at the University of Derby, England in 2012. Since then she held over ten solo exhibitions, and participated at numerous group shows including ‘Cruel City’ at The Suter Art Gallery, Nelson, New Zealand and the ‘International Art Survey’ in Beijing, China. Chandler had been a finalist in a number of major New Zealand art awards including the National Contemporary Art Award (2015), the New Zealand Painting and Printmaking Award (2018, 2015) and the Molly Morpeth Canaday Art Award (2015, 2014 and 2012). In 2007, she won the Landscape Award at the Nelson Regional Art Awards.

In 2016, following a four-month residency at the Leipzig International Art Programme in Germany, she developed a body of work, titled ‘Between Yesterday & Tomorrow’ that explored issues of gentrification in Leipzig.234 Inspired by the strong painting scene and art community, she quickly decided to keep a permanent studio at the well known Spinnerei art hub, where world renowned painter Neo Rauch has his studio, too.

In 2014, she spent two months in Beijing on the Red Gate Residency. In her solo show ‘China Dream’ (2016), at the Millennium Public Art Gallery in Marlborough, she critiqued the heavy expansion of Beijing and offered sympathy for the aspiring individual and local culture.

In 2013 she participated in an artist residency in Singapore, which has been supported by the Asia New Zealand Foundation. One year later she was invited there for an international collaboration project. From then on belonging to the international artist collective ‘Instinctive’, she exhibits in Singapore on a regular basis. With a twelve-piece entry in the collective’s exhibition ‘in(visible) 1.0’ (2017) she examined “the plight of migrant workers in this global city”, she writes.5

As an accomplished artist, her first major solo exhibition in a public art gallery in New Zealand is taking place in 2019 at The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatu, in Nelson, New Zealand. Under the title “The Dividing Line” she is presenting a complete new body of work, which has been painted in 2018 in Germany.

Lisa Chandler says herself about her art: “In my paintings, I am constantly searching for a balance between abstraction and figuration. Urban structures and people intertwine through a process of layering, obliterating and tracing. Images are painted in, painted out and painted over. The history in the layers of paint traces the transformation of urban space. This intense, time-consuming layering process, is sometimes offset by faster paintings, that offer a contrasting raw and unfinished aesthetic.”6

In 2018 she turned a collection of small works into a fascinating, evolving installation, hanging them step by step over the time of three weeks.7

Her current œuvre consists of large-scale and monumental paintings and small works on paper or canvas, including collage and printmaking techniques. For a painter, Chandler employs a wide range of different techniques. Some of her works are created in the method of trace monoprint on glass as well as with ghost or second print, which she uses for collages, as she explains: “The image is created through several steps, first wax paper is inked and paper placed over the ink. The image is then drawn directly onto the back of the paper and finally the drawn lines are transferred and a reverse image produced.”8

Additionally, Chandler scratches and cuts on the canvas with knives. Sometimes she is using a painter roll or pours and drips fluid acrylic on the painting, or sprays in graffiti style. Recently, Chandler started to create her artworks with templates from a protest stencil toolkit. It completes her visual language to depict the global protest movement. Chandler often employs a restricted “colour palette of about five colours plus black and white (...)”.9

In 2016 Judith Ritchie wrote about Chandler: “Chandler's paintings make reference to elements of urban life; derelict buildings, graffiti, skyscrapers, cranes and trees merge in and out of elements of abstraction, leaving the viewer to contemplate their own relationship with urban environments. A window or door appears in every painting, creating a visual portal for departure or entry.”10 Chandler herself communicates about her art practice: “My art practice explores the themes of urban spaces and places, and the impact of globalization and gentrification on city inhabitants. In recent years there has been a fundamental shift in my work, towards a more critical attitude to urban space in relation to globalization, gentrification and acts of protest. I am strongly influenced by the environment around me, and this ‘shift’ is, without a doubt, due to recent artist residencies I have undertaken in major cities around the world.”11 The Swiss-German art historian Dr. Sara Troester Klemm wrote about Lisa Chandler in an exhibition catalogue essay: “Trees and branches become nearly abstract ornaments. Chandler's drippings remind us of Jackson Pollock. And there is a strong connection to artists as Daniel Richter and Peter Doig. Seldom to discover in contemporary art, especially the Jugendstil visibly plays a major role in her art, too: These soft flowing floral lines and curves, clear contour-lines and luminous colours (…).”12

Chandler's works of art are often based on personally taken photographs, or from the media, internet and newspaper magazines. She then consequently liberates these pictures from their background. This mighty step leads to universally valid, profound images.

Following solo exhibitions in the INSTINC Gallery Singapore and all over New Zealand, Chandler showed her paintings in 2018 for the first time in the Archiv Massiv Gallery, which is the main exhibition space at the renowned Baumwollspinnerei Leipzig, Germany. In February 2019 her first major solo show in a museum opened at The Suter Art Gallery Te Aratoi o Whakatu. There she also held an artist talk about her exhibition „The Dividing Line“.
