Gebrüder Weiss is Austria’s oldest transport and logistics companies and ranks among the leading providers of transport and logistics solutions in Europe. The company employs roughly 6,000 employees at 150 company-owned locations worldwide and was able to generate a turnover of 1.2 billion euros in 2013. [1]

The company is wholly privately-owned by the families Senger-Weiss and Jerie and thus Austria’s largest transport and logistics provider in private hands. Its headquarters is located in Lauterach in Vorarlberg. [2]

In addition to its core business of overland transport, air & sea freight and logistics, the company also operates a number of highly specialised industry solutions and subsidiaries under the umbrella of Gebrüder Weiss Holding AG, based in Lauterach (Vorarlberg, Austria). This includes logistics consultancy x|vise, tectraxx (industry specialist for hi-tech businesses), inet-logistics (software solutions for TMS transport management), dicall (telephone service, consulting and telemarketing), Railcargo (railway transport) and the Gebrüder Weiss parcel service GWP, a shareholder in the Austrian company DPD. [3]

History of Gebrüder Weiss
As the oldest forwarding company in Austria, the development of Gebrüder Weiss also reflects the political and economical development of the region. Today, Gebrüder Weiss is a globally active company – with strong roots in the Alp-Danube region.

Prequel
The Lindauer Messenger (courier service between Lindau and Milan) was first mentioned in a document in 1322 and was operated by the Spehler and later by the Weiss family. From 1474 on, letters, goods and people were transported over the Alps on a regular basis. [4]

Company foundation
In 1823, the three Weiss brothers found the company Gebrüder Weiss in Fußach. In 1872, the company headquarters was relocated to Bregenz. In the early years of the company, branches in Vienna and the Adriatic ports were also established. [5]

Global expansion
In the 20th century, branches of Gebrüder Weiss covered all parts of Austria. From 1970 on, the company followed an expansion strategy in the German-speaking regions as well as an internationalization and modernization of existing facilities. In 1988, the parcel service DPD was established in Austria. [6] In the late 20th century, Gebrüder Weiss opened up several locations in Central and Eastern Europe as well as China. [7]

In 2000, Gebrüder Weiss founded the joint venture Weiss-Röhlig[8] together with Röhlig Logistics. [9] In the following years, the expansion strategy was further pursued in Central and Eastern European countries, the Near and Far East, the United States, Canada, the UAE and India and recently also further towards Central Asia with a new logistics centre in Tbilisi[10], an own branch in Turkey[11] and the takeover of transporting company Far Freight[12].
