I understand German but I am not able to write it correctly. I hope you will understand my English. If not, it's not so important.

You have moved Elisa Cusma to Elisa Cusma Piccione (an Italian athlete). And you have justified this by "Name at the IAAF" — and this is correct in the IAAF biography. As perhaps you also know, Cusma is the maiden name and Piccione the married one. Italians never use both, for two reasons:

• Italian women never change her family names, but very often, they use their husband's name (put like it in official papers Elisa Cusma in Piccione);
• If they do not to use the husband name, they keep the old one (less common): so there are no "double names" like in Spain or Portugal, or linked names like in France or Great-Britain, with hyphen (Dupont-Lemaire).

In the case of Elisa Cusma, she does not like her husband name (Piccione), that means Pigeon and she declared very often to Italian medias to call her only Elisa Cusma, her maiden name (La Gazzetta dello Sport, 24.08.09, p. 28 for example). Very often, IAAF made mistakes (Girat instead of Giralt, Yargeris instead of Yargelis, two names instead of the usual one, …) And I do not consider IAAF always very precise (95% yes, but 5% not). If you give a look to most of the Elisa Cusma competitions, you will find on Google much more Elisa Cusma than Elisa Cusma Piccione.

Hello Enzino,

I don't read the Gazetta dello Sport for I can't speak Italiano. But I have given two sources in the article: One by the IAAF and one by the ATFS. I do not always believe in IAAF spellings but I nearly always believe in ATFS spellings. If you have reliable sources for Cusma, one may discuss. But I don't like it at all, that articles with two sources for a name are moved without a source. --Geher 18:25, 25. Aug. 2009 (CEST)

I am member of the ATFS since 1980… In the last edition of our Athletics Annual 2009 (edited by Peter Matthews, for the Association of Track & Field Statisticians), her complete name is described as Elisa Cusma Piccione (p. 183 “National Champions 2008 and Biographies of Leading Athletes”, by Peter Matthews), so you may think you were right and I was wrong. Even ATFS makes (little) mistakes. In this case, as in all biographies, Matthews writes the name in their complete form, as for example Sylvia Chibiwott Kibet or Linet Chepkwemoi Masai. But, because you need reliable sources, I'll find a very good one for you (FIDAL, the Italian Athletics Federation) with her most common and usual name.
