The DeWind group is an internationally active manufacturer of wind turbines with German roots.

The group was founded 1995 in Lübeck, Germany, starting with the DeWind GmbH. Since sommer 2006 the group was a subsidiary company of the Californian manufacturer of transmission and distribution cable products Composite Technology Corp., based in Irvine (California). At the End of August 2008 the DeWind GmbH as part of the group announced insolvency [1][2]. In October 2008 the insolvency procedure was opened and the DeWind GmbH was dissolved due to the opening. The departments of the affiliates were unaffected by this. 2009 DSME (DAEWOO Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering) assumed these departments of the affiliates. Manager of the affiliates DeWind Engineering GmbH and DeWind Europe GmbH with together 75 employees is Dr. Sungkon Han.

Worldwide there are more than 1,000 DeWind turbines with a total capacity of 1,200 MW in operation. Already in the mid-nineties the D4 was developed with active pitch regulation and a doubly fed induction generator. This technology proved itself and therefore was used for the following models D6 and D8-2000. An advantage is the decoupling of the rotational speed of the rotor. By using the inertia of the rotor it reduces the mechanical loads on the turbine components. In addition peaks in electricity feed in are prevented.

DeWind D4

First produced wind turbine was the D4 in 1996 with a capacity of 500 kW (later 600 kW). The design of the turbine was awarded with the iF Design Award.

DeWind D6

In 1999 the D4 was followed by the D6/62 with a capacity of 1 MW. In the year 2000 the capacity was increased to 1.25 MW.

After two years of development in 2002 the D8/80 went into production with a capacity of 2 MW.

DeWind D8.2

The D8.2 is a developed version of the D8. It’s in production since 2006. The plant is equipped with a hydrodynamic WinDrive®[3] gearbox from Voith Turbo. This allows a variation of the rotor speed with a non-varying generator speed. Thereby a decoupling of generator rotation and grid frequency is unnecessary. The synchronous generator is coupled directly to the grid. This system has advantages because of the quality of the fed-in electricity and the behaviour in case of grid failure. The turbine is offered with 50 Hz as well as 60 Hz design. The design of the nacelle was developed by Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG.

Newest stage of development is the D9 with a capacity of 2 MW and a rotor diameter of 93 m. Based on the experiences with the D8 there will be different concepts.

The D9.0 is equipped with an induction generator and a converter with state of the art IGBT technology. The turbine is offered with 50 Hz design.

The D9.1 is equipped with a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generator and a converter with state of the art IGBT technology. The plant is offered with 50 Hz as well as 60 Hz design.

Just like the D8.2 the D9.2 is equipped with a WinDrive® gearbox. Therefore the synchronous generator is coupled directly to the grid. The turbine is offered with 60 Hz design. For the D9.2 the proven nacelle design by Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG is used.

DeWind D8.2 Veladero, Argentina
  • DeWind built the world’s highest wind turbine. It’s located in the Andes/Argentina at a height of 4,100 m (13,500 ft) above sea level. The turbine is a D8.2 – 2,000 kW / 50 Hz. This turbine has a new drive train concept with a special torque converter (WinDrive®) from Voith Turbo and a synchronous generator. The wind turbine was put into operation in December 2007 and is supplying the local gold mine with electricity. The title as world’s highest wind turbine is recorded officially in the Guinness book of records.[4]
