The French Wikipedia overtakes the German

Continuing decline of active editors in German WP

For years, Erik Zachte has prepared the statistical data for the development and use of Wikipedia. On this basis was regularly and intensively discussed the decline in the number of authors in the German Wikipedia. Since the beginning of 2019, the Wikimedia Foundation has started Wikimedia Statistics 2.0. The new statistic offers numerous differentiations and new facets, but it also takes some getting used to. The authors are now part of the superordinate group of editors, which also upgrades the anonymous IPs in the content areas. Data on the newcomers, as often discussed - with at least 10 edits, unfortunately I could not find more. A separate own visualization of the data in the form of graphics is actually not necessary, because you can select well line and bar charts. However, below I would like to compare two language versions with some graphics. It should be worthwhile to compare the development of the German Wikipedia with the French Wikipedia on this basis.

Growths of content pages in fr.WP/de.WP

On January 15, 2001, the English Wikipedia started, two months later, on March 16, 2001, the German version, on March 23, 2001 followed the Wikipedia in France. The respective associated and leading chapters of the WMF, the associations Wikimedia Deutschland (WMDE) and Wikimedia France, were founded about 3 years after the start of the encyclopedia project at about the same time: WMDE on June 13, 2004 and Wikimedia France on October 23, 2004. Both projects had one comparable start. Like a "little sister", the fr.WP has since followed a time lag and a little bit less the "German brother". While the German WP made a stormy start with impressive growth in the early years, the French WP showed a more leisurely growth. This may be due to the population or numbers of native speakers. In 2017, 105 million native German speakers faced only 79 million native speakers in the French-speaking world.[1] In the ranking of the mother tongues of the Duden publishing house German ranked 10th and French the 11th place. This illustrates for the French WP a smaller potential for potential Wikipedia authors in the ratio of 1: 1.3. By the way, we also find this ratio again in calls from Wikipedia pages to Stats 2 in June: 644 million to 875 million (i.e., 1.3) But now it seems to be in the fast lane.

Content edits in fr.WP/de.WP

At the end of June 2019, the French WP with 2.1 million articles was just behind the German WP with 2.3 million articles. However, the average monthly increase since December 2017 in the French WP has been higher than the increase in the German WP, which may be explained by bots. For the end of June, the following averages were available: 10 086 for fr.WP, 9 411 for de.WP. Anyway, both have now reached the same size and growth, which is certainly due to the comparable potential of active authors or editors. The monthly number of content edits is in the de.WP at around 500 thousand per month, the fr.WP has caught up and is only slightly lower. In June 2019 it was 474 thousand to 442 thousand; for the past 12-month period the mean value is 512 thousand to 460 thousand.

Editors in fr.WP/de.WP total

While the de.WP has been characterized by a decline in author spending for more than ten years, the fr.WP is moving at almost the same level, with even small growth. Both are currently with about 55,000 editors monthly. (Mean values: 55.9 thousand for fr.WP; 55.5 thousand for de.WP) These include not only the registered users, but also IP's and bots, each with at least 1 edit. Regarding the so-called assets Editors, that is Editors with at least 5 edits a month, show the same trend. The number is around 8650 with a small lead each for the fr.WP. In June 2019 there were 55.9 thousand to 55.5 thousand (all editors) and 8650 to 8010 (at least 5 edits). For the middle values, the following relation applies to the active editors: 8793 (fr) to 8483 (de). The stable development of the active editing participants in the fr.WP is countered by a long-lasting decline in authors in the de.WP. For the past 3 years, from July 2016 to June 2019, the mean value in the fr.WP increased slightly by 1.7% (from 8,641 to 8,797); however, it steadily declined by 16% in the de.WP (from 10,130 to 8483).

Registrations in fr.WP/de.WP

The data on the registrations of new user accounts (user) show a positive picture, but the fr.WP with monthly about 15.3 thousand new accounts is well above the number of new users in the de.WP with 9.7 thousand. However, caution is advised, since only very few of the new registries edit and, again, very few remain active. The order of magnitude is 1-5%, depending on the degree of activity and the time remaining. At the center of discussions to date on a decline in the de.WP's authors was the growth in the number of editing users, which was declining. By December 2018, the wiki stats 1.0 had those numbers of newcomers who had reached their tenth edit. If we look at these numbers, the following comparison results: There were 704 newcomers in the fr.WP, but only 453 in the de.WP. For the middle 12-month values (2018): 758 to 589, ie 29% more in the fr.WP. Of the approx. 15 thousand newly registered in the fr.WP and 9.7 T. in the de.WP, around 5% each achieve this level of activity of at least 10 edits. The more than 50% higher level of account registration in the fr.WP can therefore explain a level of recruiting, which - unlike in the de.WP - obviously compensates for or even exceeds the number of departures to editors/authors. Considerable differences are also evident in the full-time staff of the Chapters. With only 8 permanent employees 2019 [2] Wikimedia France is well behind the three DACH chapters together. Above all, WMDE could perhaps look to Wikimedia France to see how leaner structures could produce better results in the interests of reinforcing author communities. Brücke 09:39, 11. Jul. 2019 (CEST)
