the directorial debut of Steven Ellison. Filmmaker, music artist, and producer Flying Lotus—who is also known by his birth name, Steven Ellison—made his directorial debut with his short film, Royal, which debuted to critical acclaim at the 2016 Sundance NEXT FEST in Los Angeles in August. He recently launched the production company Brainfeeder Films, which is focused on producing traditional and nontraditional entertainment and commercial content for global audiences. The company is shepherding multiple projects under FlyLo’s leadership.[1]

Filmmusik[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]

NOCH ÜBERSETZEN: Ellison’s score vacillates between hellish ambient sounds and the kind of free-jazz electronica on which he’s made his name to date, along with some guests; his regular collaborator Thundercat pops up throughout, as does Aphex Twin. It lends the film a nauseating affect, appropriate given the subject matter, and manages the rare feat of guiding an audience from nodding their heads to turning them away entirely depending on the scene.[2]

The soundtrack featuring new material from the likes of Aphex Twin, Thundercat, Flying Lotus and his rapper alias Captain Murphy.[3]

Rezeption[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]

NOCH ÜBERSETZEN: Chris Plante sagt über den Film: The copious gore, the cruel extended rape joke, the abortion sight-gags, and any number of other vomit-inducing pseudo-goofs are so distracting and disorienting that making sense of the film would require a repeat viewing.[8]

Dennis Harvey von Variety: [Ein] insufferable mishmash of interwoven segments - aimless in themselves, even more so as a whole - almost entirely concerned with bodily functions and bodily fluids.
