Thomas Morris, deceased, long a prominent figure in the professional and public life of this part of the state, had been a practicing attorney of La Crosse for about four decades when death called him in his sixty-seventh year. The following interesting review of the career of this well loved and highly esteemed citizen was written by a personal friend:

Thomas Morris, or as he wrote his name, Tom Morris, was born December 9, 1861, at St. Hyacinthe, St. Armand parish, in the province of Quebec, Canada, and died in New York city, September 17, 1928. He was the son of John and Jane (Graham) Morris, natives of Ireland. The Morrises of Ireland are of Norman descent, the name originally being Fitzmaurice. We infer from the name that his mother was of Scotch descent. His father was a farmer and merchant, and a leading man in his vicinity in Canada. He died at La Crosse, Wisconsin, at the age of ninety-two.

Mr. Morris' early years were spent on his father's farm and in his father's store at St. Sabine, Canada. He attended the French and English schools of his parish, and later graduated from Bedford Academy. The year after his graduation he studied medicine, but not finding this to his liking, he went to St. John and for several years clerked in a large department store. Later he went to Syracuse, New York, and for three years engaged in the coal business.

Selling his business, he came to La Crosse, Wisconsin, in May, 1886, and here he continued to reside throughout the remainder of his life. On coming to this city he learned the barber's trade and purchased a shop on the north side, meanwhile studying law in the office or offices of Crane & Martindale on the north side.
