Early life[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]

Mancuso was born in 1996 in Palermo. He started playing guitar with his father Vincenzo at the age of 10 and got onto a stage to play live, at 12. He went on studying classical guitar in high school in Palermo and later graduated in jazz guitar at the Palermo Conservatory of Music.[1]

Career[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]

Mancuso performed at NAMM 2019 [2] and 2024 [3] in Anaheim, CA

In 2022, he was invited by Al Di Meola in the thirty-first edition of Eddie Lang Jazz Festival, to duet with him on stage.[4]

In 2022, he was chosen by Italian progressive rock band pfm, to perform live in Lugano Estival Jazz, replacing their guitarist, who was busy on that day.[5] Pfm then released a double record comprising 16 tracks called: “THE EVENT – Live in Lugano”, which is the first live record released where Matteo Mancuso is playing guitars.[6]

SNIPS[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]

In 2017, Mancuso founded a trio called “SNIPS”, which includes Salvatore Lima, on drums and Riccardo Oliva on bass. SNIPS is a jazz fusion band and their music is based on rearrangements of popular fusion standards and original compositions. In the following year the trio has played at the Musika-Expo in Rome and at Musikmesse in Frankfurt.[2][7]

Matteo Mancuso Trio[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]

Matteo Mancuso Trio, Stefano India on Bass and Giuseppe Bruno on Drums [8]

The trio was formed in 2020 with Stefano India on Bass and Giuseppe Bruno on Drums.[9][10] When Mancuso uploaded their performance of 'Havona' by Jaco Pastorius to YouTube, the trio received recognition for their "killer lineup"[11]

In 2022, Matteo Mancuso Trio performed at the Bremen International Festival; the Auditorium Parco della Musica in Rome; Uppsala Jazz Festival in Sweden; Spoleto Jazz Festival, in Italy.[12]

Their first album is called: "The Journey".[13]

Vai Academy 7.0 (2024)[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]

Mancuso was a featured artist at the Steve Vai's "Vai Academy 7.0" guitar camp from January 2-5, 2024, in Orlando, Florida, USA. He conducted clinics, performed in concert and jammed with Steve Vai and his band, joined by famed keyboardist Jordan Rudess.

Style[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]

He switches to using a rest stroke with his index finger and middle finger to pick the strings like a classical guitar player.,[14] a finger-style right hand technique.[15] He has been called a virtuoso.[16]

"There's this Italian kid on the internet—Matteo Mancuso. He's 20 or something. He plays an SG and he does this almost flamenco-style thing. I mean, he's a virtuoso beyond virtuosos." Tosin Abasi[17]

Mancuso does not use a guitar pick and he uses a finger-style right hand technique.[15]
