Es sind folgende Kohorten bekannt, die aus Mauren aufgestellt wurden: Cohors quingenaria Maurorum, Cohors milliaria Maurorum und Cohors II Maurorum. Von Einheiten aus Mauren mit den Nrn. III bis VIII fehlt jede Spur; wieso gibt es dann aber eine Cohors IX Maurorum?
- Kai Juntunen schreibt dazu: The possibility that the numeral of this unit refers to a full series of nine cohorts of Moors seems highly unlikely, as we have no evidence at all that the cohorts III-VIII Maurorum would ever have existed, while the existence of cohors II Maurorum is based on a single reference [..] suggests that the numeral and the ethnic identity do not necessarily refer to the same thing, namely the place of recruitment, but instead may indicate two different aspects related to the units’ origin. [..] Thus, the numerals of these units seem to refer to the size of the auxiliary garrison in the province of original constitution, while the ethnic name refers to the ethnic background of the first cadre of recruits. Kennedy nahm an, dass die Nummer x für die x-te Kohorte stand, die in einer Provinz rekrutiert wurde: that the numerals of cohors XX Palmyrenorum and cohors XII Palaestinorum indicated that they were the 20th and 12th cohorts of the provinces where they were recruited, respectively the provinces of Syria and Syria Palaestina. - Thomas Tews schreibt dazu: Da wir aber keine weitere cohors Palmyrenorum kennen und es auch sehr unwahrscheinlich ist, dass Palmyra Rekruten für 20 oder mehr neue Kohorten stellen konnte, handelte es sich wohl um eine gemischte Serie mit Kohorten, die in verschiedenen Regionen ausgehoben wurden. Mögliche Kandidaten dafür sind die cohors XII Palaestinorum, die wiederum in einem in Dura Europos zutage gekommenen Papyrustext aus dem Jahr 232 genannt wird, sowie die cohors IX Maurorum, die wir aus zwei in der Provinz Mesopotamia gefundenen Inschriften kennen.
